Earth Day in Santa Barbara 2024
Most people have heard of Earth Day and have an idea of why we have an earth day, but not everyone knows the history behind it. On January 28, 1969 a well drilled by Union Oil Platform A off the coast of Santa Barbara blew out.
On March 21, 1969, President Nixon came to Santa Barbara to see the spill and cleanup efforts and told the crowd “the Santa Barbara incident has frankly touched the conscience of the American People.” During the same time, Senator Gaylor Nelson from Wisconsin saw the 800 sq mile oil slick from an airplane! It gave hm the impetus to ratify a national day for environmental education, which he deemed Earth Day.
On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans attended Earth Day teachings and gatherings across the U.S., including a one-block long gathering organized by Community Environmental Council (CEC) in Santa Barbara, that continues today as the annual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival.”
As you may have figured out from other posts or because you are familiar with Santa Barbara, we love a good excuse for a good community event and Earth Day is one of the best reason!
Do not forget about Santa Barbara’s Earth Day Festival on April 27 and 28, 2024.
